Scott Collins, Parliamentary Spokesman for South Northamptonshire has backed the Campaign for the Protection of Rural Englands campaign to make sure the Localism Bill released recently by the coalition government gives communities a real say and influence in the planning system.

“Currently developers are able to appeal any planning decision made by a local authority, but local community groups affected by a development have no such rights. Before the election the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats proposed to give local people the power to challenge certain inappropriate developments, and to limit the rights of developers, however, the Localism Bill contains no mention of this” states the CPRE’s website.

“I agree that the Localism Bill should be much more exact in how it will give a meaningful voice to local people and communities when it comes to planning. As a Chair of a planning committee I want to see developmemts welcomed by communities across Northamptonshire and England. But for that to happen it must mean that communities must have a voice which means something and does not see their views belittled in a planning system designed for developers and not for local people. Its not the fault of the developers and I have seen great examples of the planning of homes as a conversation between community and developer and it has lead to good developments with local support. We must see more of this” said Scott recently.

One of the key parts of the CPRE’s plans is to give limited right of appeal for communities against planning approvals.
