As of today 37’400 people in South Northamptonshire and a further 101’000 people will get an income tax cut thanks to the Liberal Democrats. And a further 1140 in South Northants and 2990 in Northampton will pay no income tax at all.
Raising the personal tax allowance so you keep more of the money you earn was the top Liberal Democrat manifesto commitment in the general election last year.
And now we are in Government, we are carrying out the promise.
In April, the personal tax allowance goes up by £1,000 – saving taxpayers in South Northants and Northampton £200 a year. By the end of this Parliament, the tax allowance will be raised to £10,000.
That means a resident of of South Northants or Northampton will be able to earn £833 a month before having to pay tax.
“Liberal Democrats fought the last General Election with a promise to take people on low incomes out of tax altogether and to raise amount people earn free of tax to £10,000,” said Scott Collins, Parliamentary Spokesman for South Northamptonshire.
“The first installment of that plan comes in April when we raise the personal allowance by £1,000.
“Residents of South Northants have still not forgiven the last Labour Government for doubling the starting rate of income tax- leaving many people on low incomes worse off.”
