Northamptonshire Liberal Democrats force rethink on Conservative plans for increasing Social Services charges

Posted By: Scott Collins September 24th, 2010

The Liberal Democrats on Northamptonshire County Council are forcing the Conservatives to re-examine their proposals to increase charges for the most vulnerable residents for services such as meals on wheels and transport to day centres.

Councillor Brendan Glynane, Leader of the Opposition said “We’ve said all along that these eye-watering increases will hit the vulnerable hardest. Transport charges are going up 300%. The cost of meals on wheels for people taking up the service is now £6.26. This is an attempt to kill off the services. It is clear from these increases that Conservatives are hell-bent on hitting the vulnerable. Northamptonshire Conservatives are still the nasty party.”

“We have called this issue in to the Scrutiny group because we think the Conservatives have got it wrong. Not only that, but it is highly unlikely they will even make the cash they think they will, as they haven’t considered that people will use the services much less. They really need to think again on this attack on our most vulnerable citizens.”

Cllr Scott Collins commented “This is a cost increase that will put an extra financial burden on the users of the services. These are not luxury services, these are basic care needs that will affect hundreds of our most vulnerable families across the County.”

“I am glad that at the Liberal Democrats on the County are calling the Conservative administration to account for the sake of all those affected. The Liberal Democrats at least still have a social conscience on the County Council.”
