Winning here!

Liberal Democrats across the country were celebrating by-election victories last night.

In Torbay, Andrew Baldrey won the St Mary’s with Summercombe Ward with a majority of 436 over the Conservative candidate.

The Liberal Democrats increased their vote by more than 16% while the Conservative saw theirs drop by nearly 24%.

In Cherwell Alaric Rose held his council seat for the Kidlington North Ward with a majority of 107, while in Basildon, Philip Jenkins held the Nethermayne Ward with a majority of 144.

In the Thatcham South and Crookham Ward Bob Morgan will continue to work for his constituents on the West Berkshire Unitary Authority, having secured a majority of 149. In the same ward, Janette Miranda held her seat on the Thatcham Town Council, with a lead of 151 over the Conservative candidate.

Lewes saw John Stockdale holding his seat for the Bridge Ward. He saw off a Green challenger with a majority of 118.

Commenting, a Liberal Democrat Parliamentary spokesperson for South Northamptonshire, Scott Collins said:

“So much for all the nay sayers that said people would punish the Lib Dems for being part of the coalition. These excellent results for the Liberal Democrats show this to be nothing more than myth and wishful thinking on behalf of opposition partys.

“What better way to illustrate that people who supposedly are upset with the Coalition Government believe that the Liberal Democrats are still best placed to represent them and work hard to deliver the excellent local services people deserve.”
