Cuts will destroy a community link and damage literacy amongst young people

The Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Children and Young People on Northamptonshire County Council, Cllr Jenny Conroy, has today announced that the opposition Liberal Democrat budget will reverse the Conservative administration’s closures to libraries.

Cllr Conroy said “Libraries are really important for our young people and communities. The Liberal Democrats are determined to reverse the proposal by the Conservative administration to close 8 libraries across the County. I believe those proposals will have a seriously detrimental effect across the County.”

“With the threats to library services across the County we must find a way of maintaining this vital link for communities across South Northamptonshire. The proposed cuts to libraries, their hours and the mobile library service must not go ahead. At very least more time is needed to find other funding streams or set up ‘friends of ‘groups or trusts to look at keeping services alive and vibrant” Said Scott Collins, Parliamentary Spokesman for South Northamptonshire.

Commenting further Scott said “When I was a child living in Towcester I remember fondly my regular trip to the old library, which was still based in Watling Street (where the launderette and dry cleaners is now). It was this thatopened up the world of books to me and made me an incessant reader and passionate reader. These closures and cuts risk this passion for future generations. It also risks cutting off the community focal point role the mobile bus service plays in many of our rural villages”
