Conservative Councillors have announced that they might walk away from the Grosvenor Greyfriars redevelopment if they were to win the election in May.
Councillor Richard Church, Liberal Democrat Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Planning says:
“Northampton is at a cross roads, and this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for Northampton which it would be reckless and foolhardy to turn down. No responsible political party puts at risk thousands of new jobs and a £300 million investment in the heart of our town just because there is an election on.”
“A target start date will be announced by Legal and General at their exhibition in the Grosvenor Centre this Friday and Saturday. I expect to see plans that will give Northampton people the shopping centre they deserve and major retailers demand if they are to come to Northampton, and I expect to see a proposal that contributes to a vibrant future of the whole of our town centre. The Council must continue to work with Legal and General to make sure any start date can be achieved, because without us it won’t.”
“I am so disappointed that the Conservative opposition cannot raise their sights above their desperate bid to win a few votes in May.”
