Local people in Towcester are up in arms after South Northants council closed the last public toilets in the town.
The decision by South Northants to close the toilets was, according to a spokesman, “made last March” in order to close a million pound budget deficit in the 2010/11 budget.
The notice attached to the door of the toilets states “these public conveniences will be permanently closed as of Monday 10th January 2011″.
Scott Collins, Parliamentary Spokesman for the Libetal Democtrats in South Northants said “Following the closure of the only other public toilets in Towcester in Moat Lane a couple of years ago these were a valued facility for people living in Towcester as well as those visiting the town”.
“I am disappointed that South Northants Council have not instigated an alternative scheme, similar to that implemented in Northampton by the Liberal Democtrats in response to the previous Conservative administrations closure of public toilets across Northampton in 2006/7. The introduction of a community toilets scheme has been a great success in Northampton with residents and visitors alike”.
The loss of these toilets will affect many visitors and residents across the town and beyond especially, but not exclusively, for the elderly and parents with young children for whom such a facility is a god send.
Commenting further Scott said “For all the effort the Tory party in Northampton has put into blaming the Lib Dems for the Tory closures of the toilets in Northampton (even featuring it in countless election leaflets during recent elections in Towcester) it will be galling for many to see their District colleagues closing public toilets”.
