Conservative County Councillors refuse to see sense over street light turn off

The Conservatives at County Hall have rejected a call from the Liberal Democrats to listen to appeals from the public about street lights that have been switched off after the clocks have gone back.

The Liberal Democrats motion also called for the appeals process to be improved, after numerous problems were reported by Councillors.
Cllr Brendan Glynane, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Opposition said “I’m shocked by the Conservatives refusal to listen to local people. Many residents are living in fear due to the Conservatives decision to turn off streetlights.

The Liberal Democrats were asking for local residents to be given a chance to appeal about lights in their area once the clocks go back. We know there are problems now, but when the nights draw in it’s crucial that there is an opportunity for people to let the Council know about the impact.”

Scott Collins commenting said

“I cannot believe that yet again the County Torys have refused to understand the problems their turning off of street lights are causing for many communities.
They are creating fear as the elderly fear to go out on dark streets, a situation that as darker nights close in will only get worse”

Cllr Glynane continued

“The arrogance of the Conservatives is unbelievable. They are plunging Northamptonshire into darkness, causing the fear of crime to rise and leaving vulnerable people scared. The least they could do is give people the courtesy of letting them put forward their views when the nights draw in. Sadly they can’t even do that. It’s pathetic.”
