The Conservative County Council’s decision to cut support for career advice for young people is short-sighted, according to Northamptonshire Liberal Democrats.
Cllr Jenny Conroy, the Shadow Cabinet Member for Children and Young People said “Times are hard at the moment, particularly for young people. There is a real shortage of jobs and cutting back on help to get young people into work isn’t going to help.”
“It is not clear that there has been any consultation with the young people who use the service. For Northamptonshire Conservatives to be removing front line services that help people into jobs in a time of recession seems short-sighted, especially if they haven’t even asked those young people what they want.”
“Before any cut is made the Conservatives need to consult those who are going to be effected by it the most.”
“Make no mistake about it, this is a decision made solely by Northamptonshire Conservatives, whatever they may claim. They need to take responsibility for their actions, rather than trying to pass the buck”
Scott Collins, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson said “This is just ludicrous for the County Council to make this cut. It is so short sighted. Young people need all the help they can get to help them gain training and work but that seems to be less important than balancing the books in County Hall”.
