Comprehensive Spending Review not all bad news

Cllr Scott Collins Parliamentary Spokesman for South Northamptonshire

Following weeks and months of uncertainty and fear the results Comprehensive Spending Review was finally announced by George Osbourne.

Scott Collins commented “Its is a plan that is going to be painful for everyone and there is no disguising that fact. But there is also no disguising that it needs to happen”

“I cannot stand here today and say I agree with all of the plans in the review or even pretend to do so, But it will in my view move us towards a more stable footing both nationally and internationally. This review was already long overdue not because someone forgot but because the Labour Government was afraid to be straight with the people of Britain about the financial mess Gordon Brown and his Labour colleagues had presided over”

“We already knew that Labour was plannning cuts of a very similar scale had they been re elected but dare not identify the cuts before the election so all plans now seem to be ultimately deniable now in the ‘Not our fault’ mindset of the newly chosen Labour leadership.”

“Labour left us borrowing £400 million a day and even they admitted it wasn’t sustainable. The question was all about timing not whether or not cuts had to be made.”

“We made it clear during the election that Cuts would need to be made, and we were condemned for saying it,  Its the price you pay for honesty apparently. I feel the cuts will set us back on a road to recovery and the extra funding for schools with the Pupil Premium and the plans to create more apprenticeships coupled with the tax changes earlier this year lifting tens of thousands out of tax show that people will still benefit from the key pledges in the Liberal Democrat Manifesto”

“It was never going to be easy and we as Liberal Democrats have had to compromise in some areas.  But we stand by what we said during the elections on the economy and have at least shown we have a plan to fix our damaged economy not a statement you can make about the previous Labour government ”.
