The Conservatives have abandoned a major deal to dispose of the County’s waste, 3 and a half years into the making.
Cllr Brendan Glynane, Liberal Democrat Leader of the Opposition said “The Conservatives appear to have no plan B to the PFI scheme they put forward. The cost of sending waste to landfill is set to soar from its present cost of £48 per tonne up to £80 per tonne by 2018. Without a serious plan in place the cost will either have to be met by cuts to frontline services or hikes to taxes for hard pressed local taxpayers.”
“Now the Conservatives are saying to partners that they never really supported the deal anyway. What kind of message does that send out to people who have been working with them for years?”
Parliamentary Spokesamne for South Northants, Scott Collins said “This is a real blow for the everyone in Northamptonshire. It may seem like an odd thing to say ut with the cost of disposing of the Counties refuse due to rise by over 90% over the next 7 years that cost will no doubt be passed on to the tax payers across the County. It also will sound a note of caution for any business or organisation who was thinking about any partnerships with the County Council. ”
