Thousands of pensioners in South Northamptonshire and across Britain are benefitting from a rise of £4.50 a week in the state pension, thanks to the Liberal Democrats.
The rise is the result of a top Lib Dem election pledge – to restore the link between pensions and earning.
“We fought hard for this policy in the General Election last year,” said Scott Collins, Parliamentary Spokesman for South Northamptonshire. “I am delighted we have been able to deliver it so soon.”
For 13 years the last Labour Government promised to restore the link – but failed to do so. Many pensioners have still not forgiven Labour for the miserly 75p pension rise they gave a few years ago.”
“We should make sure at all times that this link is kept this time. The devastating breaking of the link by the Conservatives in the eighties caused pensions to lose pace with the cost of living meaning that pensioners fell further and further behind as inflation and prices rose. It also allowed Labour to insult pensioners with pathetic rises. I hope that never happens again. ” Said Scott
